![]() ![]() My writer friend Stevyn Colgan said he’d met Banks before he passed away, but that he thinks he always struggled to top this one. If I tell you anything more than that, we’re getting into spoiler territory, and Banks was very careful to make sure that he drip fed what he wanted the reader to know as and when he wanted them to know it. I don’t know what else I can tell you, because it’s basically just a kick-ass read that’s also super dark, and that’s all you really need to know. As you can probably guess, it isn’t exactly an easy read, although it is an interesting one. ![]() It’s also super dark, basically following a murderous young man in the arse-end of Scotland as he maims small animals and kills off his relatives. It’s also Banks’ first novel, which is pretty impressive considering how good it was. Ian Banks is one of those authors who people always tell me I’ll enjoy, and yet I’ve read two of his books before this one and they didn’t leave a particularly strong impression. ![]()
